Russell Brand has never been someone that I've had a particular interest in, having only ever seen him 'be funny' on Big Fat Quiz Of The Year with Noel Fielding in 2006 and not really being interested by the kinds of films he makes (they always seem a little samey to me), however after watching his wonderful interview with Jeremy Paxman in which he discusses his disenchantment with politics and then going on to read his article in the New Statesman furthering his comments on the subject, I decided read up and research his stance on various political and topical issues, and actually found that I quite like his mindset.
So, after discovering this new love, my brother bought me his live DVD 'The Messiah Complex' for Christmas, and I watched it for the first time the other day and I thought it was absolutely incredible. Brand is such a likeable man, the way he speaks so eloquently and manages to mock himself at the same time as challenging those who try to undermine him or his talent, creates this wonderful balance between someone willing to stand up for himself and someone knowing when they sound egotistical. Normally the comedian has to make me laugh non-stop for me to then regard it as a good stand-up, however the way that Brand got me to me think as well as laugh made this one of the most unique and fantastic experiences of stand-up comedy I have ever experienced.
